Have you seen our sign in the window that says that Greengate is a HATS-STEDTRAIN School Grant Recipient? Have you ever wondered what that is?
HATS stands for the Huntsville Association of Technical Societies. STEDTRAIN stands for Science and Technology Education and Training. Each year, this organization receives grant proposals from individual teachers in schools throughout the Huntsville region for projects that involve math, science, and technology education, and after thoughtful review, awards grants to support the most worthy projects.
On Saturday, August 27th, I was honored to attend the HATS grant awards ceremony with our own Greengate recipients. This year, there were 30 grant recipients from 22 schools in the region, and I am incredibly proud to say that four of our Greengate teachers received grants totaling $3,871.46 for our school!

This year’s recipients, their departments, and their grant titles are as follows:
| Lisa Bruton |
Math |
Making Math Movie Stars |
| Melissa Bryant |
Physical Education |
Math with a Twist |
| Shirlana Haythorn |
Science |
Magnifying Science |
| Judy Sweatman |
Language and Literature |
Automatons and Stop-Action |
Melody McCulley, our after-school Homework Lab teacher, also received a grant for her other school. We clearly benefit from having her as part of our teaching team here at Greengate.
Many larger schools were represented, but we stood out in the group for having so many from one school! This speaks to the dedication as well as the professionalism of our teaching staff. I am so proud to be associated with such a group, and your students will benefit from their creative and innovative plans for the coming year. We are grateful to the HATS organization for their dedication to educating the next generation of leaders. The motto at the bottom of their program reflects their philosophy:
We put a man on the moon. Now let’s help our children reach for the stars! |
