Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and EducatorsGreengate is pleased to once again offer high quality training in structured, multi-sensory language instruction. This Orton-Gillingham course will provide participants with the opportunity to learn the structure of our written language as well as systematic, multisensory techniques for teaching students with dyslexia and other language-learning differences.

Registration is limited to the first 30 applicants for the Associate Level course. All classes will be held at Greengate School, which is hosted by Holmes Street Methodist Church

Overview
The Associate Level Course is an intensive 10 day course for individuals holding a bachelor‘s degree. It is the foundation-level course in the Orton-Gillingham approach, enabling instruction with better understanding of the structure of language and multisensory teaching. The course comprises an in-depth introduction to phonology, structure of English, characteristics of dyslexia, multisensory teaching, assessment tools, grammar and written expression.

  • Structured, Multisensory Teaching Techniques
  • Informal assessment and Diagnostic-Prescriptive Teaching
  • Individualized Lesson Plan Development and Delivery
  • interactive demonstrations and activities using the O-G method.

Following completion of the course work, students may choose to participate in a supervised practicum leading to membership at the Associate level in the Orton-Gillingham Academy of Practitioners and Educators. The requirements for admission to the Academy at the Associate level are: minimum 60 hours of course work conducted by an Academy Fellow, 100 hours of supervised one-to-one tutoring, as well as a selection of readings about dyslexia. Requirements:

This course will meet daily, Monday through Friday, for two weeks, 8 hours each day. It exceeds the required course work requirement for the Associate Level of the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators. Presentations will include lectures, multisensory experiences, and teaching demonstrations. Classes will provide hands-on opportunities to learn the structure of our language and practice multi-sensory techniques for teaching readings, spelling and handwriting. Homework requirements will include the completion of required readings, written summaries, lesson plans and quizzes.

Instructor:

Janet Jones has a B.S. in Speech and Language Pathology and an M.A. in Learning Disabilities. Her educational background, combined with 33 years of experience as a multi-sensory language instructor have allowed her to teach children, with varying needs, at all levels of the language continuum. She has been challenged to develop innovative methods and creative activities to meet their individualized needs. As a fellow of the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators, she has provided extensive teacher training. She is the creator of Moose Materials, activities and games to support structured multisensory language instruction.
