Greengate is pleased to once again offer high quality training in structured, multi-sensory language instruction. This Orton-Gillingham course will provide participants with the opportunity to learn the structure of our written language as well as systematic, multi-sensory techniques for teaching students with dyslexia and other language-learning differences. Overview:
The Associate Level Course is an intensive 10-day course for individuals holding a bachelor‘s degree. It is the foundation-level course in the Orton-Gillingham approach, enabling instruction with better understanding of the structure of language and multi-sensory teaching. The course comprises an in-depth introduction to phonology, structure of English, characteristics of dyslexia, multi-sensory teaching, and informal assessment tools.

Registration is limited to the first 20 applicants for the Associate Level course. All classes will be held at Greengate School, which is located in at the historic Lincoln Mill, 1300 Meridian Street N, Suite 2200, Huntsville, AL 358011300 Meridian Street N, Suite 2200, Huntsville, AL   35801.

Schedule:  8:30-4:30 M-F , 1-hr. for lunch (10 days, 70 hours total)

Requirements:
This course will meet on weekdays, Monday, June 4th  through Friday June 15, for 8 hours each day (including a one-hour break for lunch).

Presentations will include lectures, multi-sensory experiences, and teaching demonstrations. Classes will provide hands-on opportunities to learn the structure of our language and practice multi-sensory techniques for teaching readings, spelling and handwriting. Homework requirements will include the completion of required readings, written summaries, lesson plans and quizzes.

Next Steps:
Following completion of the course work, students will receive a certificate of participation, signifying that they have been "Trained in the Orton-Gillingham Approach".

Graduates may then choose to participate in a supervised practicum leading to membership at the Associate level in the Orton-Gillingham Academy of Practitioners and EducatorsOrton-Gillingham   Academy of Practitioners and Educators. The requirements for admission to the Academy at the Associate level are:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Minimum 60 hours of course work conducted by an Academy Fellow (this course exceeds this requirement)
  • 100 hours of supervised one-to-one tutoring (practicum) over a minimum of 8 months to one year
    (at least 10 of which to be observed by an Academy Fellow)
  • Evidence of completion of a selection of required readings about dyslexia

Required Readings:
Your training fee includes a copy of each book on the required reading list.  We will place the book orders periodically as participants register for the course, and we will let you know when your books are available.  We recommend registering early so that you can get a head start on your reading.

Instructor:
Janet JonesJanet Jones has a B.S. in Speech and Language Pathology and an M.A. in Learning Disabilities. Her educational background, combined with 34 years of experience as a multi-sensory language instructor have allowed her to teach children, with varying needs, at all levels of the language continuum. She has been challenged to develop innovative methods and creative activities to meet their individualized needs. As a fellow of the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators, she has provided extensive teacher training. She is the co-creator of Moose MaterialsMoose Materials, a collection of activities and games to support structured multi-sensory language instruction.
