Admissions Criteria and Process

Thank you for your interest in Greengate School. Since 2002, our mission has been the education and development of students with dyslexia, and empowering them to achieve. Our students are taught using evidence-based practices of the Orton Gillingham approach to target their strengths as well as their differences. At Greengate School, we believe that all students can learn given the proper tools to reach their full potential. 

The Admissions section of our website will provide you with information about our admissions process. Unlike many independent schools, Greengate School offers rolling admission, which means we have no application deadline, and parents may begin the admission process at any time. However, applicants who apply during the summer or early in the school year will be given first priority for admission, and tuition assistance.

Our admissions procedure is designed to identify for admission students having average to above average intelligence who can benefit most from Greengate School’s curriculum and environment, structured to fit the needs of students with diagnosed language-based learning disabilities such as dyslexia. The information we require will help us learn as much as possible about your child, including their strengths and weaknesses and academic potential, as well as their specific learning needs. We gather information from many sources to help us determine whether or not your child is a good fit for Greengate School. To determine if the fit is right, we’ll need to review diagnostic testing, school transcripts, teacher evaluations, and a personal interview with parents and the student.

Admission Process

Admission Criteria

Greengate School accepts students who meet the following criteria:

  • A diagnosis of a language-based learning disability, specifically dyslexia.
  • Average to above average intelligence, as measured by the Wechsler Scales.
  • A history of emotional stability.

 
Greengate School does not admit students who:

  • Have emotional, behavioral or medical pathologies
  • Have severe attention problems
  • Have moderate to severe receptive and expressive language deficits
  • Have less than average intellectual abilities

It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, or national and ethnic origin in administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, scholarship and loan programs, and athletic and other school-administered programs.

 

STEPS IN THE ADMISSION PROCESS

The following steps are required to be considered for admission:

  1. Initial inquiry Parents should complete the inquiry form or contact the Admissions Director to schedule an initial meeting regarding the student’s educational needs, and to tour the school. Parents should bring the student’s most recent (within 3 years) psycho-educational evaluation to this meeting.
  2. Online Application If the prospective applicant appears to be an appropriate candidate, the parents are asked to complete the on-line application, and provide the required documents listed below. Please note, the application packet will not be sent to the Admissions Committee until all required documents have been received by the School:

    - Completed application form, with a $135 non-refundable application fee
    - Current school records: transcripts, report cards, teacher evaluations, Individualized Education Plan (IEP), 504 Plan, or Private School Service Plan, standardized test scores
    - A signed and dated Authorization to Release Student Records form for current and past schools
    - Copy of Immunization Record
    - A full psycho-educational evaluation including cognitive battery IQ testing, such as the Wechsler Scale or the Stanford-Binet Scale, with a diagnosis of dyslexia and/or Language-Based Learning Disabilities
    - Any additional evaluations; i.e., speech/language, educational, psychological, occupational therapy
    - Any reports by specialists who have worked with the applicant 

  3. The Admissions Committee will review the prospective student’s file and if the student is found to be an appropriate candidate, the student and parent/s will schedule a return visit to the school, where the student may be given further screening assessments, and the parent/s will meet with the Admissions Director and/or the Head of School.
  4. The prospective student will be required to spend one or two days visiting the school (if school is in session), following the regular schedule, and be evaluated by school staff.
  5. After a final review, the Admissions Committee will make an enrollment decision.
